gtg_logo_sticksWhy Grow the Game?

The Grow the Game Initiative is a national program to grow the game of hockey across the U.S.  Founded by the Youth Sports Coalition the Grow the Game Initiative’s goal is to grow the game of hockey so that all players learn life lessons through hockey participation.

Some of the life lessons that makes hockey unique from other sports include:

  • Commitment - Hockey takes lots of time and practice to develop into a good skater, teammate, and quick thinker.  You have to make a commitment to yourself and the team to make all practices and games.
  • Teamwork - No hockey game can be won by one player.  You must learn to work as a team and accept your role on the team.
  • Ownership - If you make a mistake or score a goal you must take ownership in what you have done and learn from it.
  • Discipline - You must have discipline in order to be successful in hockey and life.
  • Loyalty - You become loyal to your teammates and very protective.  Of all the sports played, hockey teammates become family. Also, so much of hockey occurs in confined spaces (locker rooms, rinks, lobbies) that parents/siblings are forced to interact and bond.
  • Leadership - Hockey gives lots of opportunities for players to become leaders and to lead by example.
